About Brian Devlin KC

Brian Devlin KC graduated from the University of Windsor law school in 1976 and immediately moved to Calgary to article with Jones Black, now Bennett Jones. He articled to Jack Major KC, then Alberta’s leading medical negligence defence lawyer and later a Justice on the Supreme Court of Canada.​
After being admitted to the Alberta Law Society in June, 1977, Devlin partnered with Noel O’Brien KC and later, Don Macleod KC, to form O’Brien Devlin Macleod. During his 43 years with the firm, Devlin appeared on criminal and civil cases at all levels of court in Alberta as well as the Supreme Court of Canada. In 1994, he began focusing on representing people injured through medical malpractice as well as auto accidents and assaults. ​

From 2019 to 2024, Devlin worked with Law Fifty One, assisting Steve Breslauer and Derek Nash with the development and completion of medical malpractice cases.
Devlin was listed in the Canadian Legal L’Expert Directory as “Consistently Recommended” in medical negligence since the directory began publication. He was listed in Best Lawyers in Canada from 2006 through 2024 in personal injury and medical malpractice law. In 2010, the publication named him Personal Injury Lawyer of the Year in southern Alberta. In 2014 and 2019, it named him Lawyer of the Year for medical negligence cases.​
Devlin co-authored the book: “A Practical Guide to Medical Malpractice Litigation -- a Plaintiff’s Perspective” (2011, Carswell Publications). He’s delivered papers and lectures on medical malpractice and personal injury issues for the Canadian Institute; Alberta, Ontario and BC trial lawyers Association; Alberta Civil Trial Lawyers Association, as well as various sections of the Alberta Law Society.​
He’s produced papers and lectures in fields including laser eye surgery, preparation and conduct of medical malpractice actions, assessing damage in infant claims involving severe brain damage, chronic pain and the assessment of chronic pain cases.
​In 2016, Devlin was inducted into the prestigious American College of Trial Lawyers, an organization comprised of experienced North American trial lawyers who meet the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiality.
